Cormorants I
Cormorants I
Sunset falls over a Socotra Cormorant colony. This species of Cormorant is just one of many witnessing the effects of climate change directly. I studies this under-appreciated bird for four years in order to fill in the many knowledge gaps associated with this cormorant species and to raise awareness of their plight. Decreased fish stocks, sea-level rise, increased extreme weather events, ghost net trapping, persecution and loss of habitat are all direct threats to this charismatic bird. These large colonies (up to 40,000 pairs at this particular breeding colony) I would consider an indicator for ecosystem health both on land and at sea due to the cormorants reliance on both and their choice of breading sites directly on the coast. Cormorants globally are given a bad reputation but this is not deserved and the continual persecution of these bird species should be stopped.
